Decision 2024

VP Kamala Harris Shines in Unite for America Conversation with Oprah Winfrey

On September 19th, two of the most powerful Black women in the world sat down for a conversation. Here’s what happened.

Since President Joe Biden exited the Presidential race, Kamala Harris has been in high gear.

In the middle of that whirlwind, she found time to sit down with Oprah Winfrey for a profound livestream conversation about the state of our nation.

The two addressed the topics on everyone’s minds – immigration, the economy, women’ rights, school safety, and more. From listening to the heartfelt personal stories of everyday Americans, to speaking on plans for the early days of her administration, Kamala was on point – and on message.

“We each have those moments in our lives when it’s time to step up.” -Kamala Harris

With more than 250,000 people tuning in, Harris told the story of who she is, where she’s come from, and what she hopes to do if she’s elected as the 47th President of the United States.

Her tone was upbeat and positive, unlike much of the messaging that Americans have endured during this election cycle.

You can catch the Unite for America replay here:

Harris shared a wealth of information in the brief time the two spent together in the suburbs of Michigan, a crucial battleground state. The Vice President hopes to speak to the concerns of swing voters who remain undecided, and those who are considering sitting out the election altogether.

On Immigration & Our Border

When asked about her approach to solving “the border problem,” Harris spoke on her history as a prosecutor in a border state, and her record for prosecuting transnational criminals in California.

She made a point of reminding voters about the Bipartisan Border Bill that was presented before Congress earlier this year, and how Trump derailed the effort, preferring to run on the rather than solve it.

Harris committed to signing that bill into law if she is elected.

An Economy On the Brink

Kamala Harris talks with Oprah Winfrey about the future at Unite for America event

Though celebrities like Tracee Ellis Ross, Julia Roberts, and Meryl Streep added their star power to the event, Unite for America’s focus was the stories of the everyday American.

Nothing is more pressing for average Americans today than the economy. More than half of Americans 18-34 say that the cost of living is their top issue this election year, and they’re not the only ones.

Is This What Middle Class Feels Like?

When Philadelphians Rachel and Garrett, first time homeowners with a child under 2, told the story, Harris leaned in.

They’d made the same decisions so many of us have – going to school, getting good jobs, and planning a life. When costs started to skyrocket, they moved back in with their parents to save for their first home. Now, Rachel’s sister and her husband are living with them to do the same.

In response, Kamala talked about her plans to increase the Child Tax Credit to $6,000 so families don’t have to worry about the essentials. She also plans to introduce a $25,000 tax credit for first-time homebuyers. It’s all part of what she calls the “Opportunity Economy,” a plan to increase the economic security of all Americans.

Heartbreak In America: Reproductive Rights and School Safety

The conversation continued with Harris speaking on the issue of reproductive rights in America, and the costs of Roe vs. Wade being overturned. There were few dry eyes when Hadley Duvall, a 22-year-old abortions rights advocate, shared her story about being raped and abused by her stepfather as a child.

“I can’t fathom thinking about the other Hadleys out there, who don’t have that choice…that don’t have somebody to go to.” Duvall went on to laud Harris for her commitment to women’s rights. “Thank you for hearing us and seeing us when the Supreme Court won’t.”

Amber Is Not a Statistic

Unfortunately, Amber Nicole Thurman fell victim to the horrors of Georgia’s 2022 abortion ban. She suffered a rare complication after taking an abortion pill.

After seeking emergency care, doctors waited 20 hours before performing a D&C, which could have saved her life had it been performed more quickly. The 28-year-old’s story has recently come to light after Georgia courts ruled that her death was preventable.

Amber’s mother and sisters, Shanette, CJ, and Andrika came to Unite for America to tell her story and help others. Vice President Harris sought to comfort the family, and inform the public. “Here’s the problem with this…is she on death’s door before your decide to give her help?”

“This is a healthcare crisis that affects both the patient and the professional.”

“Yet Another Horrific School Shooting”

As the conversation continued, the topic of safety in America came up. Oprah mentioned the shocking number of school shootings that have taken plan in America in the 25 years since Columbine – 417. More than 383,000 American children have been exposed to gun violence.

Sadly, these situations have become far too common. Apalachee High School is the latest in a line of heartbreaking stories.

“This is not normal, and this is not right. ” -Oprah Winfrey

Natalie Griffith, a 15-year-old survivor of the Apalachee school shooting, and her parents Doug and Marilda told the story of the day she was impacted by school gun violence. They made a touching, heartfelt plea for common sense gun legislation to protect American children.

Democratic candidate Harris responded, saying she supports 2nd Amendment rights, and she supports a ban on assault weapons, universal background checks, and red flags laws – because they are common sense, practical steps we can take to protect Americans.

The Vice President then confirmed that she, herself, is a gun owner, but she’s willing to do what’s necessary to end this violence in our country.

Unite for America: The Wrap Up

After a poignant 90 minutes, the conversation drew to a close. In her parting words, Vice President Harris states that our love for our country is what unites us. “This is a moment where we can, and must, come together as Americans, and realize we have more in common that what separates us.”

It was a stirring appeal, but its impact on undecided voters remains to be seen. With 47 days left on the campaign trail, Harris’s focus must be on securing the swing vote and winning battlegrounds. Perhaps moments like this can help her do so.

At the end of the event, Oprah made a final appeal to all Americans to get involved, but focused on those in the center we are still undecided.

“This is the moment, for all decent people, for all caring people…who want the best for yourself and you want the best for other people.

This is the moment, for people who are tired of all of the bickering and all of the name-calling…people who are exhausted by the craziness, and the made up stories, and the conspiracies…THIS is the moment…because you know that we can do better, and that we deserve better.”

This is the moment, indeed.

Stand Up. Be Counted.

How to Vote in the 2024 US Election as an Expat

If the process of voting while abroad has been stressing you out, use our simple guide to make it a breeze.

Another election cycle is upon us, and it’s time to cast our ballots. If you’re a new expat or long-term traveler, the thought of voting while abroad is probably kicking your anxiety into high gear. BonVie to the rescue!

Despite a few extra steps, voting while living abroad is a fairly simple process and won’t disrupt your digital nomad life. Whether you’re sipping cocktails at a Bali beach club or navigating the streets of Medellin, casting your vote is easy. Here’s how you can make sure your voice is heard, no matter where your journey takes you.

Check Your Voter Registration Status

The first step to voting from abroad is to confirm that your voter registration is up to date. If you haven’t voted recently or have changed your address while abroad, your registration may have lapsed. In order to ensure you’re able to vote in this election cycle, go to your state’s voter registration site and be sure your profile says your registration status is “Active.”

How to Check Your Voter Registration Status

  • Visit your state’s voter status site or Vote.org and enter your information to confirm your registration.
  • If you are not registered, you can register online through the same website or via your state’s election portal.
  • Use the FPCA form (more on this below) to register to vote and request your absentee ballot at the same time, if needed.

Keep your registration current to ensure you’ll receive election materials on time.

Request Your Absentee Voting Ballot

Once you’ve confirmed that your registration is active, the first step is to request your absentee ballot. Every citizen living outside the country must submit a Federal Post Card Application (FPCA) to ensure they receive a ballot for the elections they’re eligible in that year.

How to Request Your Official Ballot

  • Visit the Federal Voting Assistance Program website at FVAP.gov.
  • Complete the FPCA form either online or download and print it. The form instructs your election officials where and how you would like to receive your absentee ballot.
  • Submit the completed FPCA to your local election office. You can send it by email, fax, or mail depending on your state’s rules.

Submit the FPCA as early as possible—preferably at least 45 days before the election. This way, you’ll have ample time to receive, complete, and return your ballot.

Voting via Email, Fax, or Mail

voting while abroad

Once your local election office has processed your FPCA, you’ll receive your ballot. Voting methods depend on your state’s rules, but most states allow at least one of the following options:

  • Email or Fax: Some states allow voters to return their ballots via email or fax, which will make things much easier if you’re traveling and don’t have reliable access to postal services.
  • Mail: If your state requires you to send your ballot by mail, ensure that you have enough time for the postal system to deliver it by your state’s deadline. If it’s crunch time, consider using a courier service like DHL or FedEx to guarantee timely your ballot is returned by the deadline.

Check your state’s specific requirements and options at FVAP.gov to avoid any last-minute surprises.

Key Absentee Voting Deadlines to Remember

Each state sets its own voting deadlines, so be sure to double-check yours. Generally, the following timelines apply:

  • Request your absentee ballot as early as possible, at least 45 days before Election Day.
  • Return your completed ballot as soon as you receive it. Aim for at least a week or more before the deadline if mailing your ballot.
  • Election Day is Tuesday, November 5th, 2024. Most states require that your ballot be received by the time the polls close on that date, but some have a different deadline. Be sure to check your state’s requirements as early as possible.

You can find specific state deadlines and rules by visiting FVAP.gov.

Voting Resources for Expats

Living abroad can make it tricky to navigate voting rules, but there are dedicated resources for those of us who want to vote from overseas. These organizations and websites provide easy-to-understand guidance and support:

  • Federal Voting Assistance Program (FVAP): The go-to resource for absentee voting. The site includes all the necessary forms and tools to help you request your ballot and return it. Visit FVAP.gov for comprehensive guidance.
  • VoteFromAbroad.org: A nonpartisan site that walks you through registering to vote and requesting your ballot from overseas. It also provides updates on any changes in voting laws and deadlines. Visit VoteFromAbroad.org.
  • U.S. Embassy or Consulate: Embassies and consulates often have resources and staff who can help you with absentee voting. Some locations even offer free mail services for returning ballots.

Just in Case…

If you don’t receive your ballot in time or are worried about missing deadlines, you can use the Federal Write-In Absentee Ballot (FWAB) as a backup. This is an emergency ballot for U.S. citizens abroad. You can fill it out and send it to your local election office to ensure your vote is counted.

  • Download the FWAB at FVAP.gov.
  • Submit it the same way you would your regular ballot—by email, fax, or mail, depending on your state.

The Wrap Up

Even though we live abroad, most expats still take an active interest in the policies and elections back home. Though there are a few more steps to voting as an expat, the importance of doing our civic duty can’t be overstated, especially during times like these.

These tips will make casting your vote seamless, whether you’re 500 miles from home or 5,000. Act now to make sure your voice is heard.

New York Jury Finds Donald J. Trump Guilty on All 34 Counts in Hush Money Trial

Donald Trump is officially a felon. Here’s how that happened, and what that means for his second bid for the Presidency.

On May 30th, 2024, a New York jury convicted former President Donald J. Trump on all 34 felony counts of falsifying business records.

The charges stem from payments made to Stormy Daniels, an adult film star, during Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign. The payoff was intended to buy her silence about past intimate engagements between Mr. Trump and Ms. Daniels.

This verdict marks a historic moment, as Trump is the first former U.S. president to be convicted of felony crimes.

The Case & The Verdict

The jury’s decision came after extensive testimony and thorough examination of a wealth of evidence.

Prosecutors argued that Trump orchestrated hush money payments totaling $130,000 to prevent damaging information about his interactions with Daniels from coming to light. His reason, attorneys for the state asserted, was to influence the election outcome.

The defense claimed the payments were personal matters unrelated to campaign finances. Despite their efforts, the jury found Trump guilty, emphasizing the severity of manipulating business records to conceal illegal activities.

Trump spoke outside the courtroom immediately following the verdict.

The former President is no stranger to accusations of questionable business record keeping. He is currently embroiled in several court proceedings, both civil and criminal, related to everything from his business practices to how he handled classified documents at the end of his term.

Earlier this year, he lost a civil fraud case resulting in a $355 million judgment. A month before, he was order to pay $83.3 million after losing the civil sexual assault case presented on behalf of writer E. Jean Carroll.

One might think that, in the face of overwhelming litigation – and now, a litany of felony convictions – Mr. Trump would no longer be pursuing the Presidency.

One would, almost certainly, be wrong.

Now What? The Guilty Verdict’s Impact on Trump’s Presidential Candidacy

JaneRosenberg | Pool Photo | AP

Many are now questioning how this criminal verdict affects Trump’s potential run for the Presidency. For Trump’s camp, it’s likely full speed ahead, unless the July 11th sentencing results in significant penalties.

Can a Convicted Felon Run for President?

U.S. law does not prohibit a felon from running for, or becoming, President. Our Constitution sets three main requirements for Presidential candidates. They must be:

    • A natural-born citizen of the United States
    • At least 35 years old, and
    • A U.S. resident for at least 14 years

Despite the outcome of recent legal battles, Trump still meets all the requirements for candidacy, and thus can’t be forced to step aside. In the face of the moral objection some citizens seem to have to a convicted felon holding the nation’s highest office, Team Trump appears, so far, unfazed.

Beyond the Verdict: The Impact on the Future of American Politics

Trump’s conviction will likely shift political dynamics, influence voter priorities, and further erode constituents’ waning trust in public officials.

The trial underscored the importance of accountability in leadership. After witnessing such a spectacle, it’s time for frank national discussion about legal reforms and ethical standards in politics.

The Wrap Up

The conviction of Donald J. Trump is a landmark occurrence in American politics. The former President has always been notorious for pushing the boundaries of political decorum, but is a criminal conviction enough to awaken the American public?

It is necessary, in the course of a nation’s history, to examine the systems that undergird its foundations. It’s time to ensure that elected leaders reflect our ethical standards, values, and priorities.

Making Our Presence Known

What Jasmine Crockett’s Clapback on MTG Says About The Luxury of Taking Up Space

Representative Jasmine Crockett’s alliterative clapback is a masterclass in standing up for yourself.

It’s the clapback heard round the world.

Bleach blonde. Bad built. Butch body.

Six words put Rep. Jasmine Felicia Crockett’s (D-TX) name on everyone’s lips this week, and sparked much needed conversations about civility, decorum, and how Black officials should respond to lowly attacks from their opposition.

Sometimes, the best response is the truth.

Rep. Crockett’s statement came after a verbal assault on both her intelligence and appearance by Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), an infamous MAGA republican who was a fringe outlier before 45 rose to political prominence.

Here’s how it went down:

Greene launches into an ad hominem attack against Rep. Crockett.

This is followed by an immediate response by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), after which the Chairman calls for a brief recess. Upon returning, he attempts to give Greene the floor, over the protests of Representatives calling for her incendiary words to be stricken.

This is when Rep. Crockett responds with her now famous one-liner:

The Moment Jasmine Crockett Said “No More.”

“…I feel confident that my district is okay with the fact that I, as a Black women serving in a Black district, decided to stand up for myself.”

– Rep. Jasmine Crockett

When Rep. Crockett responded, the room erupted into heated discussion, and the Chair called for another recess.

By end of day, the entire situation had gone viral, and a much-needed conversation about how Black professionals should respond to unprofessional conduct by others.

With six words, the Congresswoman dealt a satisfying blow to the unspoken hierarchy in the workplace.

For decades, Black women – Black people in general – have bit their tongues in the face of racially-motivated aggression. From slick comments about our hair, to insinuations that we are less competent than our white counterparts, we’re expected to “grin and bear it” for the sake of career advancement.

Jasmine simply said “no more.”

In a room where she and MTG are not only colleagues, but peers, she chose to stand up rather than be a shrinking violet, and the effect was immediate.

Other members of Congress launched into diatribes about decorum, what’s “appropriate” in Committee, and restoring order.

Funny how that always happens when we fight fire with fire.

Haven't celebrated in a while? Here are three great ways to start.

The post It’s Our World: 3 Ways to Honor Earth Day appeared first on Bon Vie Magazine.

]]>
If you haven’t thought about Earth Day since elementary school, it’s time to think again.

The mission of EarthDay.org is “to diversify, educate and activate the environmental movement worldwide.” Black people have been at the forefront of conservation, sustainability, and environmental wellness since time immemorial. Celebrating Earth Day is an extension of our ancestors’ intentions.

Stories about climate change and environmentalism don’t often include or highlight Black activists, so it’s easy to forget how involved Black people are in environmental justice work.

Here’s Why You Should Care

According to the NAACP, Black people are 56% more likely to breathe air pollution that we did not cause, and 75% more likely to live near oil and gas refineries.

Negative climate and environmental conditions tend to adversely impact Black communities more deeply than others. The health of the Earth directly affects Black health outcomes.

How to Get Involved

If you haven’t celebrated Earth Day in a while, here are three fun ways to honor Mother Nature this year:

Plant something.

Whether it’s a tree to help clean the air, a perennial garden in your community, or vegetables for a bountiful summer harvest, putting something in the soil this April 22nd will benefit Planet Earth.

Make a commitment to nurture your new plot and you’ll be helping heal the world in no time.

Spring clean & recycle.

By clearing out old clutter and recycling things you no longer need, you’ll extend the lifecycle of useful items and keep them out of our overflowing landfills.

The more ways we find to be sustainable today, the better for future generations of Black folk.

Support an organization on the front lines.

Every step we take for environmental justice and wellness counts. So do our dollars. Research Black-founded and led environment focused organizations and donate to show your support for the cause. Organizations like Blacks in Green (BIG) do the work of educating and advocating every day, and could use our help. Find an org you resonate with and give generously.

What you do for the Earth every day makes a difference for our people everywhere. Let this Earth Day be a kickoff for lifelong sustainable living!
