Fall Fierce

The Best Fall Hairstyle Trends for Black Women

Moving into autumn means that crisp air and cooler temperatures are prompting a wardrobe change, and a shift in how we care for our hair.

Just like our hair routines change with the seasons, so do the styles we sport. Whether your hair is natural or relaxed, autumn offers the opportunity to refresh your style while maintaining your hair’s health.

Let’s dive into the best fall hairstyles for Black women, and a few essential tips to keep your hair thriving as fall and winter approach.

Natural Hairstyles Perfect for Fall

Crown/Halo Braids

Beautiful Halo Braids for Black Women

A regal and timeless option, crown braids will keep your hair tucked away while showcasing your natural beauty.

This is a great protective style that will give your ends a break and make getting ready a breeze for a week or more.

Use a silk or satin scarf at night to maintain the style and prevent frizz.

Spritz with a water-based moisturizer as needed, and your hair will thank you.

Chunky Twists Chunky Twists | Best Fall hairstyles for Black women

Chunky, two-strand twists are a versatile, protective style perfect for the cooler months.

They help lock in the moisture that’s essential to protecting our hair from the dry autumn & winter air that can cause breakage.

Plus, they’re low-maintenance, allowing you to minimize manipulation and heat.

Keep your scalp moisturized with light oils like jojoba or a hydrating leave-in conditioner, and your twist can last a full week or two. Avoid heavy creams that could cause build-up, and you’ll have a gorgeous twist out for a few days after the style has run its course.

Flat Twists Updo

Photo: @hairbylarose | Instagram

Flat twists, when styled into an updo, offer an elegant look perfect for work or fall outings. Twists are gentle on your hair and scalp, making them a healthy choice to give your hair a rest and still look beautiful.

Apply a moisturizing butter or cream when twisting, and reapply every few days as needed.

Senegalese Twists

Senegalese Twists | Best Fall Hairstyles for Black Women

Photo: @Curldaze | Instagram

Senegalese twists are a fun and easy style that celebrates everything beautiful about our natural hair.

They can be worn up or down, making them ideal for both casual and sophisticated looks.

Pull them back into a sleek bun for a versatile look that can go anywhere.

The Silk Press

Great Fall hairstyles for Black women

Photo: ORS Hair

For the girls who want to go serve 20-inch bustdown as the weather cools, a silk press is an excellent option. It gives you the straight, sleek look of relaxed hair without the commitment of chemicals.

Find a natural hair specialist who knows how to minimize heat damage while maximizing shine.

Put your heat protectant to work and avoid applying heat more than once a week to preserve your curl pattern.

Relaxed Styles for Fall

The Classic Bob

Photo: @ren56

The sleek and timeless bob is perfect for the fall season.

This 90s coded hairstyle looks good long or short, and it’s easy to maintain with minimal heat.

You can wear it straight or add soft curls for a voluminous look.

Since relaxed hair can dry out quickly in the colder months, incorporate deep conditioning treatments regularly to keep your strands soft and hydrated.

Soft, Voluminous Curls

Photo: @dianashin | Instagram

Curls add body and movement to shoulder-length relaxed hair. Whether you use a curling iron, Marcells with a flick of the wrist, or flexi rods, soft curls bring a sense of whimsy and romance to the fall aesthetic.

Pair yours with well-curated layers like a long-sleeved tee and a vibrant jacket for a fly look any day of the week

Quick Care Tip: Use a lightweight serum to lock in moisture and add shine without weighing down your curls.

The Perfect Pixie Cut

The pixie cut is a chic and bold choice for fall. A style that works for both natural and relaxed hair, the signature short cut has been doing number for decades, and shows no signs of stopping.

It looks fantastic in all the best fall hair colors, and looks sophisticated no matter the event. A pixie cut is edgy, always modern, and perfect for your fall routine.

Keep your pixie fresh by wrapping it in a silk scarf and applying a light oil in the morning to smooth any flyaways.

Tips for Your Fall Hair Care Routine

Hydration is Key

As the air gets colder and drier, it can do a number on your hair. Keep  your hair hydrated by using water-based moisturizers and sealing with natural oils like argan or castor oil.

Protective Styles Are Essential

Fall is the perfect time for protective styles like twists, braids, and buns. These styles will help protect your ends from breakage and reduce the need for daily styling.

Limit Heat Usage

While it’s tempting to use heat for a quick style, try to limit how often you reach for your flat iron. Excessive heat can lead to damage, especially as your hair gets drier in the colder months.

Deep Condition Regularly

A regular deep conditioning treatment is a must. It helps to restore moisture, strengthens your hair, and prepares it for seasonal changes.

Take Care of Your Scalp

Our scalps often become dry and itchy as the weather cools. Keep it healthy by massaging your scalp with light oils or a scalp treatment designed to moisturize and invigorate.

Cover Your Tresses at Night

Using a satin or silk scarf or sleeping on a satin pillowcase can help prevent breakage and frizz caused by friction from cotton bedding.

FAQs for Great Fall Hair

Q: How often should I wash my hair in the fall?

It depends on your hair type and activity level. For natural hair, washing every 1-2 weeks is ideal to maintain moisture balance. For relaxed hair, aim for once a week, especially if you use heat tools regularly.

Q: Should I trim my hair during the colder months?

Yes! Regular trims (every 8-12 weeks) are essential to maintain healthy ends and prevent breakage, especially since our hair can become drier and more prone to split ends and breakage in cooler weather.

Q: Can I wear my natural hair out in colder weather?

Absolutely! Just make sure you’re taking extra steps to hydrate and protect your strands from the dry air. Using a moisture-focused leave-in conditioner and sealing with oils can help keep your curls defined and moisturized.

Q: What products should I avoid?

Stay away from products with a high alcohol content, as they strip our hair of moisture. Heavy creams or butters can also cause build-up, so opt for lightweight, water-based products that hydrate without weighing down your hair.

The Wrap Up

The hallmarks of fabulous Fall hair are moisture, protection, and style. By following a few simple tips and choosing styles that protect your tresses and make you feel confident, you can keep your hair healthy and beautiful all season long.

Here's what they talked about, and why these moments matter.

Decision 2024

VP Kamala Harris Shines in Unite for America Conversation with Oprah Winfrey

On September 19th, two of the most powerful Black women in the world sat down for a conversation. Here’s what happened.

Since President Joe Biden exited the Presidential race, Kamala Harris has been in high gear.

In the middle of that whirlwind, she found time to sit down with Oprah Winfrey for a profound livestream conversation about the state of our nation.

The two addressed the topics on everyone’s minds – immigration, the economy, women’ rights, school safety, and more. From listening to the heartfelt personal stories of everyday Americans, to speaking on plans for the early days of her administration, Kamala was on point – and on message.

“We each have those moments in our lives when it’s time to step up.” -Kamala Harris

With more than 250,000 people tuning in, Harris told the story of who she is, where she’s come from, and what she hopes to do if she’s elected as the 47th President of the United States.

Her tone was upbeat and positive, unlike much of the messaging that Americans have endured during this election cycle.

You can catch the Unite for America replay here:

Harris shared a wealth of information in the brief time the two spent together in the suburbs of Michigan, a crucial battleground state. The Vice President hopes to speak to the concerns of swing voters who remain undecided, and those who are considering sitting out the election altogether.

On Immigration & Our Border

When asked about her approach to solving “the border problem,” Harris spoke on her history as a prosecutor in a border state, and her record for prosecuting transnational criminals in California.

She made a point of reminding voters about the Bipartisan Border Bill that was presented before Congress earlier this year, and how Trump derailed the effort, preferring to run on the rather than solve it.

Harris committed to signing that bill into law if she is elected.

An Economy On the Brink

Kamala Harris talks with Oprah Winfrey about the future at Unite for America event

Though celebrities like Tracee Ellis Ross, Julia Roberts, and Meryl Streep added their star power to the event, Unite for America’s focus was the stories of the everyday American.

Nothing is more pressing for average Americans today than the economy. More than half of Americans 18-34 say that the cost of living is their top issue this election year, and they’re not the only ones.

Is This What Middle Class Feels Like?

When Philadelphians Rachel and Garrett, first time homeowners with a child under 2, told the story, Harris leaned in.

They’d made the same decisions so many of us have – going to school, getting good jobs, and planning a life. When costs started to skyrocket, they moved back in with their parents to save for their first home. Now, Rachel’s sister and her husband are living with them to do the same.

In response, Kamala talked about her plans to increase the Child Tax Credit to $6,000 so families don’t have to worry about the essentials. She also plans to introduce a $25,000 tax credit for first-time homebuyers. It’s all part of what she calls the “Opportunity Economy,” a plan to increase the economic security of all Americans.

Heartbreak In America: Reproductive Rights and School Safety

The conversation continued with Harris speaking on the issue of reproductive rights in America, and the costs of Roe vs. Wade being overturned. There were few dry eyes when Hadley Duvall, a 22-year-old abortions rights advocate, shared her story about being raped and abused by her stepfather as a child.

“I can’t fathom thinking about the other Hadleys out there, who don’t have that choice…that don’t have somebody to go to.” Duvall went on to laud Harris for her commitment to women’s rights. “Thank you for hearing us and seeing us when the Supreme Court won’t.”

Amber Is Not a Statistic

Unfortunately, Amber Nicole Thurman fell victim to the horrors of Georgia’s 2022 abortion ban. She suffered a rare complication after taking an abortion pill.

After seeking emergency care, doctors waited 20 hours before performing a D&C, which could have saved her life had it been performed more quickly. The 28-year-old’s story has recently come to light after Georgia courts ruled that her death was preventable.

Amber’s mother and sisters, Shanette, CJ, and Andrika came to Unite for America to tell her story and help others. Vice President Harris sought to comfort the family, and inform the public. “Here’s the problem with this…is she on death’s door before your decide to give her help?”

“This is a healthcare crisis that affects both the patient and the professional.”

“Yet Another Horrific School Shooting”

As the conversation continued, the topic of safety in America came up. Oprah mentioned the shocking number of school shootings that have taken plan in America in the 25 years since Columbine – 417. More than 383,000 American children have been exposed to gun violence.

Sadly, these situations have become far too common.  Apalachee High School is the latest in a line of heartbreaking stories.

“This is not normal, and this is not right. ” -Oprah Winfrey

Natalie Griffith, a 15-year-old survivor of the Apalachee school shooting, and her parents Doug and Marilda told the story of the day she was impacted by school gun violence. They made a touching, heartfelt plea for common sense gun legislation to protect American children.

Democratic candidate Harris responded, saying she supports 2nd Amendment rights, and she supports a ban on assault weapons, universal background checks, and red flags laws – because they are common sense, practical steps we can take to protect Americans.

The Vice President then confirmed that she, herself, is a gun owner, but she’s willing to do what’s necessary to end this violence in our country.

Unite for America: The Wrap Up

After a poignant 90 minutes, the conversation drew to a close. In her parting words, Vice President Harris states that our love for our country is what unites us. “This is a moment where we can, and must, come together as Americans, and realize we have more in common that what separates us.”

It was a stirring appeal, but its impact on undecided voters remains to be seen. With 47 days left on the campaign trail, Harris’s focus must be on securing the swing vote and winning battlegrounds. Perhaps moments like this can help her do so.

At the end of the event, Oprah made a final appeal to all Americans to get involved, but focused on those in the center we are still undecided.

“This is the moment, for all decent people, for all caring people…who want the best for yourself and you want the best for other people.

This is the moment, for people who are tired of all of the bickering and all of the name-calling…people who are exhausted by the craziness, and the made up stories, and the conspiracies…THIS is the moment…because you know that we can do better, and that we deserve better.”

This is the moment, indeed.

The Modern Girl’s Guide to Afternoon Tea

Afternoon tea is a stalwart of classic style, etiquette, and society. We’ve got the goods on all the tea parties. Read on.

Few things evoke images of elegance, sophistication, and style like afternoon tea. Whether you’re attending a traditional English tea or a more modern gathering, knowing the basics of tea party style and etiquette will elevate your experience.

This guide will walk you through everything you need to know, from dress code to the subtleties of tea tradition, so that you can enjoy every moment.

A Brief History of Tea Tradition

Tea has been consumed across cultures for thousands of years. From Japanese tea ceremonies to the grandeur of Turkish hospitality, tea is a staple of style.

What we think of as the tea party dates back to the 17th century, when tea was introduced to England.

Originally a custom of the upper class, tea drinking became a widely fashionable social event during the 18th century.

Anna, the Duchess of Bedford, would popularize the custom of “afternoon tea” in the early 1800s – to fill the long gap between lunch and dinner.

In our community, teas have become a signature event for social occasions from sorority mixers to political fundraisers. A well-heeled sister should be prepared to attend at least a few each season.

Teas have endured because they offer a combination of social interaction, relaxation, and indulgence that isn’t often found elsewhere in our frenetic modern lives.

Afternoon Tea

Afternoon tea, also known as “low tea,” is usually served between 3:30 and 5 PM and includes a variety of finger sandwiches, scones with clotted cream, jam, and pastries.

If you’ve ever associated tea parties with cucumber sandwiches, this is the tea service you’re thinking of. It is a light, elegant affair.

High Tea

High tea, which is named for the food offered rather than its formality, is a more substantial meal than afternoon tea. It was traditionally enjoyed by workers as a hearty evening meal to tide them over.

Served later in the day, high tea includes heavier dishes like savory pies, casseroles, beans, and bread, in addition to tea and sweets.

Cream Tea

Cream tea is a delightful tea service that typically includes scones served with Devonshire (clotted) cream and jam. It is most common in the West Country area of England, particularly Cornwall and Devon.

Cream tea is often enjoyed as an afternoon snack and has been adopted by cafes around the world.

Royal Tea

Royal tea is a more luxurious version of afternoon tea, distinguished by the addition of champagne or another sparkling wine. This adds an element of celebration and sophistication to the traditional tea service, and has become popular for special occasions and high-end establishments.

Preparing for Your Next Tea Party

Preparation for tea should be done with the same care as any other fine social affair. Your choice of clothing and command of etiquette will make you right at home, no matter which style of tea you’re attending.

How to Accept an Invitation to Tea

When accepting a formal invitation to tea, promptness matters. Thank the host for the invitation and confirm your attendance. If you cannot attend, thank your host and express your regrets.

Dress Code Dilemmas

One of the first things to consider when attending a tea party is what to wear. The dress code will vary depending on the formality of the event, and the host will include details about the dress code. Here are some general tips that will serve you well:

  • For Women: Think smart casual or semi-formal. A tea dress is typically light colored or floral patterned, so such a piece is always a safe bet. Pair it with comfortable yet elegant shoes. Avoid anything too flashy or casual, like jeans or anything overly revealing.
  • For Men: Opt for a nice button-down, paired with chinos or dress trousers. A blazer will add a touch of sophistication, but it’s not always necessary. Take your cue from the invitation. As with women, avoid casual attire like t-shirts and sneakers.

Accessories and Fine Touches

Accessories can make or break your outfit, so choose them wisely.

  • Hats: In many circles, hats are a staple at tea. If the invitation mentions hats, go for something stylish yet understated.
  • Jewelry: Keep it minimal. A simple necklace or a pair of earrings can enhance your look without overpowering.
  • Bags: A small clutch or a dainty handbag is perfect.

The Essentials of Tea Etiquette

The Art of the Pour

Pouring tea might seem straightforward, but there’s a certain finesse to it. If the host pours the tea, thank them when they fill your cup. If you’re pouring, remember these tips:

  • Offer to pour for others before filling your own cup.
  • Hold the teapot with one hand and place your other hand on the lid to keep it steady.
  • Pour slowly to avoid splashing.

Milk or Sugar First?

This age-old debate continues, but either way, the key is to know the preferences of your fellow guests. If unsure, ask politely, “Would you like milk or sugar?” Traditionally, if you’re adding milk, pour it after the tea to better judge the strength of the brew.

How to Sip and Stir

Believe it or not, there’s a proper way to stir and sip your tea.

  • Stirring: Use your spoon to stir your tea gently, moving it back and forth (not in circular motions) to avoid clinking noises.
  • Sipping: Take small, delicate sips. Avoid slurping, and don’t blow on your tea to cool it. If it’s too hot, enjoy the conversation for a few minutes while you allow it to cool.

Navigating the Tea Tray

A tea party isn’t complete without an assortment of treats. Here’s how to enjoy them properly:

  • Scones: Traditionally served with Devonshire clotted cream and jam, scones should be split in half horizontally. Spread the cream first, then the jam (or the other way around, if you’d prefer).
  • Finger Sandwiches: These are usually small and easy to eat in one or two bites. Choose a couple and enjoy between sips.
  • Pastries and Cakes: Your tea tray will include a variety of sweet treats like éclairs, macarons, and Victoria sponge cake.

Engaging in Polite Conversation

Breaking the Ice

Starting a conversation at a tea party can be daunting, but with a few tips, you can navigate this social aspect with ease.

  • Compliment the Host: Begin by complimenting the host about something you admire about the event. It’s a natural conversation starter.
  • Ask Open-Ended Questions: Inquire about your fellow guests’ favorite teas, how they enjoy their tea, or if they have any memorable tea party experiences.

Topics to Avoid

Tea parties are about enjoyment and light-hearted conversation, so there are certain topics best left out:

  • Politics and Religion: These subjects can quickly become heated and divisive.
  • Personal Finances: Discussing money can be seen as intrusive and make others uncomfortable.
  • Gossip: Avoid talking about others, especially in a negative light. It can come across as rude and unsophisticated.

The Wrap Up

Attending a tea party can be a delightful experience if you approach it with the right mindset & preparation. The key is to relax and enjoy the moment. After all, tea parties are as much about the company as they are about the tea.

Happy sipping!

FAQs About Attending a Tea Party

Q: What should I do if I’m late for tea?

A: If you find yourself running late, inform the host as soon as possible. Upon arrival, apologize briefly and quickly take your seat.

Q: How should I hold my teacup?

A: Hold the teacup by the handle, with your pinkie finger gently curved inward rather than sticking out. This provides a secure grip and looks elegant.

Q: Is it okay to ask for a specific type of tea?

A: If the host offers a selection, feel free to choose your preference. However, if only one type is served, graciously accept it.

Q: Can I bring a guest?

A: Always check with the host beforehand. Bringing an unannounced guest can disrupt events arrangements.
